The famous Mountain Gorillas in Uganda

Bwindi impenetrable national Park

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is one of Uganda’s most famous national parks. It is located in the south-western part of Uganda, on the edge of the Albertine Rift Valley. The park covers about 331 square kilometers of thick tropical rain forest and is known for its beautiful scenery, steep hills, and dense vegetation — which is why it is called “Impenetrable.”

Bwindi is best known for being home to more than half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas. It is one of the only places where visitors can go gorilla trekking and see these gentle giants up close in their natural environment.

The park was established in 1991 and later became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994 because of its rich biodiversity. Apart from gorillas, Bwindi also has over 120 species of mammals, 350 bird species, and many types of butterflies and plants.

Bwindi also supports local communities, including the Batwa people, who were the original forest dwellers. They now share their culture and traditions with visitors through cultural tours.

Today, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is one of Uganda’s top tourist attractions and plays an important role in wildlife conservation and eco-tourism.

Mgahinga National Park

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is located in south-western Uganda, in the Kisoro District. It is the smallest national park in Uganda, covering about 33.7 square kilometers, but it is one of the most beautiful and important parks in the country.

The park lies in the Virunga Mountains, a volcanic mountain range that Uganda shares with Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Mgahinga is known for its three main volcanoes — Mount Muhavura, Mount Gahinga, and Mount Sabyinyo — which create a stunning landscape.

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park was established in 1991 to protect the endangered mountain gorillas. It is one of the only two places in Uganda where visitors can see gorillas in their natural habitat, the other being Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.Besides gorillas, the park is also home to golden monkeys, buffaloes, elephants, and more than 180 species of birds. The park also has a rich cultural history. It is the traditional homeland of the Batwa people, who were the original forest dwellers and hunters. Today, they share their cultural heritage with visitors through the Batwa Trail experience, which helps preserve their traditions.

Mgahinga slogan is “Where Gold Meets Silver” — referring to the golden monkeys and silverback gorillas that live there.
